Francine Prose's list of books to be read immediately is meant to teach reading, careful reading, to those who would learn from other writers. The books are poetry, memoir, history, fiction, essays, travel essays, correspondence, literary criticism, and plays. It is possible that it is the definitive list for those who would write.

Alice Munro's "Selected Stories"
This is a great book. I'm not a fan- or wasn't- of Munro, but this collection changed my mind. It has to be read to be believed.
