Francine Prose's list of books to be read immediately is meant to teach reading, careful reading, to those who would learn from other writers. The books are poetry, memoir, history, fiction, essays, travel essays, correspondence, literary criticism, and plays. It is possible that it is the definitive list for those who would write.

Drown
By Junot Diaz. Hard stories to read with, if it's not too cliche, a lot of heart. I'm happy I got to read this book because it makes me agree with Prose that the novel is alive and well. Diaz can write!
